Lawn Care Aerating and Dethctching your lawn

Picture
Aerating your lawn is a necessity when your lawn is compact and needs alleviation from dissolved gasses such as carbon dioxide. Other broken down materials include metals such as iron, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic chemicals. Aerating your lawn can often get overlooked when your trying to improve the overall look of your lawn but your not quite sure what is ruining it. An annual aeration can help a lot if its something you haven't done in a few years. It's a good idea to aerate your lawn as it helps with the flow of nutrients, water and air get into the roots and create a healthier stronger turf as well as helping seedlings get in contact with the soil.

As with all things, there's a time when you'll want to aerate your lawn. Depending on the grass type you have laid out in front of you, will determine the time of the year you want to do it just before it reaches  peak growth.

If your lawn feels hard when touching or looks a little stressed out, your lawn may need to be aerated. You can perform whats called a "Screwdriver test", Grab a screwdriver and find the patch you think needs aerating. Poke the ground with the screwdriver and if it's difficult to put in, then you may need to get it aerated. If youre considering to aerate your yard, be prepared to bring a friend or your partner along and a truck. Big box stores will carry aerators for rental use but are typically heavy duty items. With that in mind, if the task is somewhat difficult, you can call a service to get it done at the most readily appointment. To place an appointment now, call us toll free at 209-267-2797.

Getting it aerated the day after rainfall or getting it watered the day before helps the dirt loosen up and making the process easier to perform. If you notice puddles of water or your lawn looks too wet, allow a few days for it to dry before attempting to aerate. Not only is it easier to perform, but it will make less of a mess and help you locate which spot need the most attention.

Lets talk dethatch. What is it? How does it look like? Why should you do it?
Thatch buildup is like watching the leaves fall from the trees and letting it rest there for months without ever picking it up because you believe it will fertilize the ground beneath it. Thatch is exactly that. leaves or other materials that blocks dirt from grass is considered thatch buildup. Look out for these things, As too much thatch only allow a small grass root system, insects start move in, water will puddle or run off rather than soak into the ground. Chances are, you'd have to pick up the dead leaves eventually before it causes more harm than good.

Consider dethatching your lawn before doing any landscape work, It's the first thing you'll want to do since its the barrier from the dirt to your grass. If you own a rather small yard, you can easily use a dethaching rake and finish the work in less than a day, but your yard is a rather lare one, consider getting the work done by professionals while you sit back, relax and carefully spy on the gardener watching his every move, making sure he does it correct because you have no idea what he's even doing.

Having both done together is a great service to get as they both compliment eachother and is only required at least once every year. After having both services done, wait 8 to 12 weeks to see results. You will notice a difference in how the water isnt puddling. Water, fertilizer and other nutrients will be taken more easily in and the overall look of the landscape will improve.
